The Waupaca Lakemen banged out 30 hits including five home
runs as they defeated Tigerton 19-7 to win the 65th annual B.A.B.A.
Grand Championship game. Lakemen centerfielder Braden Kaminske was
named the game's Most Valuable Player as he went 4 for 5 with a double,
two home runs, scored four runs and drove in three.
The winners took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a
Tigerton error and an RBI single by Jeff Riddle. Tigerton answered in
their half of the frame on a two-run homer by Dylan Berg.
Waupaca took the lead for good scoring four runs in the
fourth. Wes Austin had an RBI single and Josh Peterson banged a three-run
homer. Braden Kaminske's homer upped Waupaca's led to 7-2 in the top of
the fifth. Tigerton cut the lead to 7-4 in their half of the fifth when
Mike Weatherwax belted a two-run homer.
The Lakemen chased Tigerton starter Nick Desrochers by
scoring five times in the sixth. Andy Wanty had a RBI single, David
Yeska singled home two runs and Austin and Josh Peterson had runs
scoring singles. Tigerton scored twice in their half of the sixth to
make the score 12-6 as Jordan Hintz and Ben Schoen belted solo home
runs.
Waupaca tacked on six more runs in the seventh. Luke Behm
had a two-run homer, Andy Wanta had a solo homer, Braden Kaminski had a
two-run homer and Jason Wanty had an RBI single.
The winners scored their final run in
the ninth on an RBI single by David Yeska. Tigerton scored in the ninth
as well as pinch hitter Tom Berg singled and later scored on Paul
Sellner's sacrifice fly.
Andy Wanty led Waupaca's offense going 5 for 6 with a home
run. Braden Kaminske was 4 for 5 with two homers and a double. Wes
Austin was 4 for 5, Josh Peterson was 3 for 5 with a home run, David
Yeska was 3 for 6, Jason Wanta was 3 for 4, Rocky Mondello was 3
for 4 with a double, and Luke Behm was 2 for 6 with a home run.
Tigerton totaled eight hits with nobody getting more than
one. Ben Schoen, Mike Weatherwax, Dylan Berg and Jordan Hintz all had a
home run.
Jeff Riddle was the winning pitcher. We worked six
innings, allowed seven hits, six runs, fanned nine and walked two. Zac
Peterson worked the last three frames. He allowed a run on one hit,
fanned one and didn't walk a batter.
Nick Desrochers took the loss. He pitched five innings,
allowed nine runs on 16 hits, fanned one and walked two. Mike
Weatherwax worked an inning giving up five runs on six hits. Shawn Much
finished for the Tigers. He allowed five runs on eight hits, fanned
three and walked one over the final three innings.
Following the game, trophies were awarded by league
officers Craig Brei (Commissioner), Nate Karke (Deputy Commissioner),
and Gordy Boldig (Secretary-Treasurer).
